The four-semester consecutive Master‘s course Town Planning NRW is jointly provided by the University of Siegen, the colleges of Bochum and Detmold and the universities of applied sciences of Dortmund and Cologne, and offers the opportunity to complete a »Master of Science« in the field of town planning with access for architects, landscape architects and town planners. The course of study is project and design-oriented. The design modules are designed to be interdisciplinary. The course bundles the areas of expertise of the teaching staff from the five college sites involved. The students are looked after by 15 professors from the subjects of architecture, town planning, urban and regional planning, urban sociology, landscape architecture, environmental and transport planning. The design tasks are processed in cooperation with other colleges, research institutions, municipalities and cities. The complexity of the design tasks increases with the experience of the students over the three semesters. The course of study builds upon experience of the IBA Emscher Park in dealing with structural changein North Rhine-Westphalia. The main focus in the course is upon working out sustainable solutions for the urban restructuring of this highly industrialised and densely populated region and for the development of the rural areas in NRW. Fundamental knowledge, aims and instruments for this purpose are conveyed in theory and practice. The central college site for the lectures is Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Due to concentrated days of attendance, currently Thursday and Friday, it is possible to have a job at the same time as being on the course. The management of the course lies with the Universityof Siegen, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hildegard Schröteler-von Brandt.
